This activation was plastered across industry and lifestyle sites, and with good reason, but it would be remiss of us not to pay homage to the genius Surfer Boy Pizza pop-up that Netflix ran in Shoreditch in June to support the launch of Stranger Things season 4.
Netflix teased with posters across the city featuring clues as to the location of the pop-up, before a mysterious portal began opening up outside White Rabbit Records in Shoreditch. As the portal grew, and word of the activation got out, crowds were seen entering the portal into the Upside Down, only to discover that they could sample some real life Surfer Boy pizza. The activation space was supported with a Surfer Boy pizza truck that hit the streets of London to spread the message far and wide.
It comes as no surprise to us that Netflix absolutely nailed this pop-up, with a history of activating amazing experiential such as their Fear Street 90s video store.
We can’t wait to see what they come up with next! .
The EDNAEDNA team couldn't help but shout from the rooftops about the incredible experience we had at Dreamachine.
Commissioned as part of Unboxed 2022 and created in collaboration with a whole roster of fantastic artists, composers, technologists, scientists and philosophers, Dreamachine is “an immersive experience like no other” (in their own words, and they’re not wrong!).
The ‘Dreamachine’ is a physical space in which you sit back, close your eyes and explore your own mind. Conjured entirely by light and music, a colourful world unfolds behind closed lids and every person's experience is apparently entirely unique to them as what you ‘see’ is created by the power of your own brain!
The real beauty of the project for us is the time for reflection afterwards. There are dedicated spaces for drawing, group discussions or solo reflection, and it was fascinating to hear about everyone’s individual experiences.
Internationally recognised as the Queen of all immersive theatre companies, Punchdrunk are currently gracing over 100,000 square feet of warehouse space in Woolwich with their latest instalment, ‘The Burnt City’; a modern reenactment of the Trojan War which sees the set divided in to one Greece building and one Troy building.
Having seen previous iterations of Punchdrunk’s work, EDNAEDNA bagged our tickets the first day they were released and were on tenterhooks until this week when we finally got to experience it for ourselves. Here’s what co-founders Tash and George thought of the experience:
Tash:
“As someone who is a huge fan of ancient myths and legends, this one felt like it was made for me. The direction and choreography were incredible. Clever use of music and lighting also enhanced the entire experience making me feel totally immersed. It’s an absolute dream to wander round the maze-like space, exploring and discovering and feeling totally transported somewhere else. No one does immersive theatre quite like Punchdrunk!”
George:
“It was, undeniably, the most incredible set I’ve ever experienced…the attention to detail and the scale was insane! The dance sequences and interactions with the space from the cast were also amazing, but the storytelling lacked clarity for me. Still, it was more than worth the ticket price to just immerse myself in the space for a few hours!”
And that's a wrap! Stay tuned another months worth of Pick's at the end of July.
